In this webinar Dr. Berger discusses the potential transformation in consciousness that may occur when individuals identify and integrate principles of emotional sobriety into their recovery. Drawing on Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, he proposes that, just as children’s perspectives and understanding are influenced by their level of cognitive development, adults’ consciousness may likewise
be influenced by their level of emotional maturity and differentiation of self. From this perspective, Berger suggests that some individuals in recovery may experience difficulties related less to the persistence of illness than to limitations in emotional development. He conceptualizes emotional sobriety as a framework for addressing these developmental challenges by promoting greater emotional autonomy, maturity, and freedom. Berger also acknowledges that some individuals in recovery experience co-occurring mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia. Within this framework, emotional sobriety is presented as a potential means of helping individuals navigate emotional challenges while continuing to address the symptoms and needs associated with co-occurring conditions.

Dr. Berger is a licensed clinical psychologist. He is recognized as a pioneer and the foremost authority in understanding the role of emotional sobriety in recovery and in integrating the concepts of modern psychology with the Twelve Steps. He received his doctorate from UC Davis and has authored several books on recovery.
